The iconic island in the middle of the harbour of San Francisco is well worth visiting.  The history is incredible from military base to military prison to civilian prison to home of Indian protester to being part of the National Park Service.

My family and I spent an afternoon exploring the island and the buildings. I highly recommend the audio tour of the cell block.  Former prison guards tell the stories of the island’s most recognisable portion of history as a civilian prison.
