Life on the Water – Iquitos, Peru

Belen is a suburb of Iquitos, Peru – a shanty town where 80,000 people call home.  At this time of year the water levels are low as it is the dry season.  In the wet season November to April the streets are flooded making the area a floating village.

The Mercado is very interesting to walk around with various meat, fish, vegetable and fruit for sale.  Bush meat is popular and the sight of turtles ripped apart to be sold as food is heart breaking.

Security is an issue for tourists in this area so if you plan to go, it is best to have a professional guide.

Life happens around the water even in the dry season.
